As we journey through American History in semester one, our older students will learn about the discovery of America. Students will engage in lessons that have them creating and thinking. Students will create timelines, maps, and journal like some of first explorers to document their trials and triumphs. Students will also love our interactive lessons about early settlers, native American tribes, the journey westward, and American people gaining their independence! Our younger students will engage in lessons about patriotism to our country, different national symbols and what they stand for. They will develop an understanding for similarities and differences between our past and present, and different native American tribes.
During semester two older students will learn about the era of the civil war and WW1. Students will discuss what caused and contributed to the outcomes to these significant events. Students will also engage in lessons about the expansion of the railroad system, the economic growth in Florida and discover several influential factors that helped shape our nation during this time. Younger students will engage in hands on activities to create timelines and lap books documenting several important people and events throughout history in America!
We believe that all students should be able to experience and express themselves through different types of arts. All students will learn about several different artist, techniques and mediums all while applying these to their own works or art. Students will be able to experience painting, printmaking and much more. Students will also be able to experience first hand the preforming arts. Students will learn about different dances throughout the decades! we will also have opportunities to attend a theater show at the Athen's Theater in DeLand, FL!
Learning about money starts early, during our first semester students will learn about just that! Students will learn about earning money, spending and saving, credit vs debit cards, along with taxes and interest. Our goal is to have students have a good foundation of money to getter understand the second part of these lessons.
During semester two the real fun starts! We put the skills they have learned to the test, students will be given the opportunities to create a small business plan. It will be their responsibility to come up with different products, crops, service, etc. to host at our annual farmers market! Students will track their budgets for supplies, give themselves a profit margins for their business.
This hands on experience will give students a chance to strengthen their farming skills and get their hands dirty. This enrichment includes learning about growing and harvesting crops to when and where to grow. Students will learn a chance to grow and harvest crops and herbs and spices to take home and enjoy with their families!
This Spring we will be studying about the oceans vast sea life, different ecosystems and the importance they serve. We will dive into how we affect our currently over polluted ocean, and how we can play a role in keeping our ocean life healthy and thriving. We will also have several opportunities to hands on lessons, activities about their favorite marine species and visits to our local ocean center.
This spring students will experience growing in a hydroponic system. Students will be challenges to create a small garden and produce content from it. They will be in charge of germinating their seeds, adapting lighting and feedings to their specific plants needs. They will opportunities to experiment with different lighting increments, collect data on plant growth and keep a log of their personal gardens. Students will learn how to identify seeds, soil types, plants, flowers and trees!
This Fall our older students we will be covering the space exploration era. Our older students will learn about our international space station and what it takes to be an astronaut. They will engage in hands on lessons about different parts of our universe and what is out in the deepest parts of space. Our younger students will learn about why and how we have sent people into space. Students will be challenged during this enrichment to work with others and implement their knowledge of space that we have learned this semester!
